Back to Basics, Short Fiction

Instructor: Josip Novakovich

This class will be held on Zoom

Even accomplished writers need to go back to the basics every now and then. In this workshop, based on Novakovich’s Fiction Writers Workshop, both beginners and experienced short story writers will complete exercises designed to guide, instruct, and challenge the creative process. Also included will be methods for self-critique, so writers can re-think and re-work stories. Josip Novakovich will also incorporate lessons from his latest book of short stories, Honey in the Carcase. Participants may wish to acquire their own copy of Fiction Writers Workshop and/or Honey in the Carcase from their favorite indie bookstore prior to the class. The class will include time for participants to do some sketching.

Josip Novakovich emigrated from Croatia to the United States at the age of 20. He has published a dozen books, including a novel, April Fool's Day (in ten languages), four story collections (Infidelities, Yolk, Salvation and Other Disasters, Heritage of Smoke) and three collections of narrative essays as well as two books of practical criticism. His work was anthologized in Best American Poetry, the Pushcart Prize and O. Henry Prize Stories. He has received the Whiting Writer's Award, a Guggenheim fellowship, the Ingram Merrill Award and an American Book Award, and in 2013 he was a Man Booker International Award finalist. He teaches creative writing at Concordia University in Montreal.
